How will I experience climate change?

Wim Thiery’s Science-accepted paper »Intergenerational inequities in exposure to climate extremes« had success both in the scientific community as in the general public. The paper calculated the rising exposure to wildfires, river floods, crop failures, tropical cyclones, droughts and️ heatwaves in relation to age, region and warming scenario.

The idea of the website was to create an easy to use interface to explore the data, find out what the climate crisis means of one’s future and then share the results as text and graphic. Within two weeks (to be ready for COP26), the web app was conceptualised, designed and developed with feedback and help from Carl-Friedrich Schleussner, Joeri Rogelj and others from VUB, Save the Children, HU Berlin and PIK.

The design of the website was designed for a younger, non-scientific audience both on desktop and mobile phones. I paid great attention to accessibility and usability. The generated graphic can be downloaded in different aspect ratios to fit formats of platforms like Instagram stories, TikTok and Twitter. The generated text also depends on the shared medium to best fit individual usages and restrictions. There are also some other design details like changing the main colour according to the warming scenario as well as changing the emoji based on age. The website is build with SvelteKit and the source code and the Jupyter notebooks are open source and can be found on Github.
